Week 8 - 7 in the new calendar: Materials - Concrete

 

 


 

Objectives

 

By the end of this week, students will have..

  • read, listened and discussed about the uses of concrete as a construction material in architecture and urban planning:
  • history of concrete as a construction material
  • characteristics
  • advantages and disadvantages
  • their uses in modern constructions and cities
  • created a script for a podcast comparing materials
  • recorded a podcast comparing these materials

 

Activities

 

Monday

1. How much do you know about concrete?

 

  • Together with a classmate complete this quiz and find out!

 

2. Learn about the characteristics of concrete in the interactive lab

 

4. Listen to the podcast, recorded by Dennis Oliver in Arizona, USA.

 

5. Take notes on your Concrete wiki page.

 

 

6. Write your conclusions on the use of concrete as a reply to the podcast

 

7. Add new words to the Glossary in Moodle

 

Wednesday

 

Materials Review

 

 

1. Get in pairs, each one will be an expert in two of these materials: brick, stone, iron & steel and concrete. Prepare a script for an interview where you will ask each other about the characteristics, advantages, disadvantages of these materials, and how they have been used in constructions and urban planning. Be creative

 

2. Post your script to a new Materials review wiki page

 

 

3. Record your interview in Audacity (in mp3 format) and post it to the Podomatic blog.

  • Go to Podomatic
  • Login with the username and password I will give you,
  • Go to Post an Episode
  • Give the podcast a title
  • Write a description of your podcast
  • Upload an image for the podcast
  • Upload the recording

 

4. Make sure you have added new words to the class glossary

 

IMPORTANT: On Monday next week: first two oral presentations: Glass and Wood. Make sure to read the instructions for the presentation
