Objectives

By the end of this week, students will have..

    • read, listened and discussed about the uses iron & steel as construction materials in architecture and urban planning:
        • history of iron & steel as construction materials
        • characteristics
        • advantages and disadvantages
        • their uses in modern constructions and cities
    • recorded a podcast

 

Activities

 

Monday

 

 

1. Check the interactive materials lab, and take notes on the characteristics of these materials on your wiki (iron & steel page).

 

2. Watch the videos below: Corrugated Iron in Australia and Iron & Steel Workers

 

Take notes on your wiki about:
      • What corrugated iron is
      • Characteristics
      • Uses through history

 

  • Steel & Iron Workers

 

 

Take notes on your wiki about:
      • What it takes to be an iron worker

 

3. Listen to the iron & steel podcast

4. Discusss with a classmate in a chat (Use Yahoo Messenger):

  • How are iron and steel used in architecture and urban planning?
  • What do you think are the advantages and disadvantages of each of these materials?
  • What is corrugated iron? How has it been used in Australia?
  • What should be the traits of an iron worker?
