Objectives

By the end of this week, students will have..

    • read, listened and discussed about the uses of brick as a construction material in architecture and urban planning:
        • history of brick as a construction material
        • characteristics
        • advantages and disadvantages
        • their uses in modern constructions and cities
    • written a composition comparing the uses of this material
    • recorded a podcast

 

Monday & Wednesday

 

1. Complete the activities about Stone if you haven't finished them

 

2. What do you know about brick? Share your thoughts. Open a brick page in your wiki and answer the following questions (you can do a search on the Web):

      • What are they made of?
      • What are they used for?
      • How many types of brick are there?
      • What is the meaning of brick laying techniques?
      • Describe 2 brick laying techniques
      • What are their advantages and disadvantages?

 

4. Listen to the podcast and reply with your thoughts on the use of brick in construction and public spaces

6. Go to Flickr, create an account and and search for bricks in architecture or bricks in urban planning.

    • Select a building or public space where brick has been used, and explain the uses given to brick, and a message you would like to send to the person who posted that photo.
    • Write your text on your brick wiki page
    • Post a picture of the building or space selected
    • Go back to Flickr and after proofreading your text, send a comment to the person who posted the message. You can include the link to your wiki page.
  • Record your description in MyChingo and post it to your wiki.

 

7. Post unknown words to the class glossary in Moodle.

 

 

 

Homework

  • Read the text about Brick found in Moodle, week 4.
  • While reading the text, create a brain map about:
      • Advantages & disadvantages
      • Origins
      • Differences through history
  • You can create your brain map using Gliffy, then copy it to your wiki brick page
