Week 4: Unit 2: Construction Materials - Stone

 

 

 


 

Objectives

By the end of this week, students will have..

    • read, listened and discussed about the uses of stone as a construction material in architecture and urban planning:
        • history of stone as a construction material
        • characteristics
        • advantages and disadvantages
        • its use in modern constructions and cities
    • written a paragraph using information about stone given in a brain map
    • recorded the paragraph

 

Activities

 

Monday and Wednesday

 

Catching up:

 

1. Collaborative correction of worksheets 1 and 2. Your teacher will tell you whose worksheets you are going to correct. Use the key available in Moodle to correct the worksheet for The architect and his profession

 

2. Catch up on your activities from previous weeks.

 

Introduction to Construction Materials

 

Go to the Materials page, read the information and discuss with your class.

 

Stone

 

1. Do this jig-saw puzzle, and share your answers to the following questions:

      • What do you see in the puzzle?
      • What is the material used?
      • How many types of uses are given to the material?

 

2. Create a new page on your wiki, call it "stone", and write your ideas about the following questions:

      • What are stones?
      • How many kinds of stone do you know?
      • What characteristics do stones have?
      • Why are stones used in construction?

 

3. Read the brain map below, and, in pairs, write a paragraph using the information given (use the "stone" page on your wiki)

 

4. Listen to the recording about stone on our Podomatic blog

5. Take notes, and add more information to the paragraph you have written. Write the new information using bold font

 

6. Read the text about stone\" found in Moodle

 

7. Edit and proofread the paragraph in your wiki

8. Practice reading the paragraph, and record it in your MyChingo.

9. Post the recording to your stone page on your wiki.

10. Add new vocabulary to the class glossary in Moodle

 

Homework for next week:

Do the following activities about the reading, and post them to the stone exercises forum in Moodle:

 

A. Read the text and find...

  • 2 definitions
  • 2 statements of comparison and contrast
  • 2 statements expressing cause and effect
  • 2 adjectives in the superlative form, and 2 in the comparative form.

 

B. Look at the following slide show and write a sentence describing 10 of the 17 images.
