Week 2: Architecture and Urban Planning: Needs in both fields

 

Amsterdam

 

 

 


 

Objectives

 

At the end of the week students will have:

 

  • discussed their own concepts of architecture and urban planning
  • listened to opinions expressed by other people regarding these fields
  • recorded their own opinions
  • read and listened to texts related to the careers of architecture and urban planning
  • used vocabulary related to this content in written paragraphs and recordings

 

 

Activities

 

Monday

 

1. Make sure you have completed the activities for week 1:

 

  • Your wiki: title, description, image, added the links to Moodle and this wiki to the navigation bar. Check the corrections for your descriptions in the forum Description corrections.
  • Messages to two of your classmates in their wikis
  • Recordings of: your profile, and pronunciation practices (links posted to the corresponding wikis in Moodle).
  • 10 words about your field - written in Spanish in your wiki
  • Embeding your own MyChingo in your wiki, on a new page called MyChingo

 

2. Go to the Introduction page, and read the information given.

 

3. Discuss with your classmates, in class, the questions on that page.

 

4. Create a new page in your wiki, call it Definitions, and write your own definitions of architecture and urban planning. To write your definition, check this page on how to write definitions

 

5. Record your definition in your ''MyChingo''

 

6. Listen to one of your classmates' recordings, and give a comment about his/her definition: Do you agree with it? Why? Is it complete? What would you add or eliminate?

 

7. Vocabulary building: Visit 2 of your classmates' wikis, read the Spanish words listed, and if you know the translation in English of some of the words, add them to the wiki (if the page is protected, write them in the discussion section.

 

 

 

 

Wednesday

 

1. Listen to the messages indicated in the Introduction page, and...

 

  • Select two of the messages you listened to, and...
  • write your responses on your wiki (name the page: Vaestro comments), and correct them, and then record your messages to the Vaestro forum (write your name and that of the person you are replying to).

 

2. Needs in architecture and urban planning: What are these needs? Are they similar for both fields?

          • Listen to this podcast
          • Check the section on needs on the Architect Studio 3D: http://architectstudio3d.org/AS3d/design_studio3d.html (click on "start your design" and then read the needs for every client)
          • Get together with a classmate for a chat in YM, and discuss the questions posed in the recording.
          • Save the chatlog and post it to the chatlog: needs forum in Moodle.
          • Write your reply to the questions in the podcast.

 

3. Go to Moodle, and select a topic for your oral presentation. Make sure to read the inst-oralpres.

 

For homework:
          • Read the text about needs in Moodle, and
          • write a summary on your wiki (open a new page called "Needs")
